Shall I compare thee to a summer's
day? Thou art more lovely and more temperate: Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May, And summer's lease hath all too short a date: Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines, And often is his gold complexion dimmed,
And every fair from fair sometime declines, By chance, or nature's changing course untrimmed: But thy eternal summer shall not fade, Nor lose possession of that fair thou ow'st, Nor shall death brag thou wander'st in his shade,
When in eternal lines to time thou grow'st, So long as men can breathe, or eyes can see, So long lives this, and this gives life to thee.
And yet this time remov’d was summer's time, The teeming
autumn, big with rich increase, Bearing the wanton burden of the prime, Like widowed wombs after their lords' decease: (97:5-8) ⑸
Our love was new and then but in the spring When I was wont to greet it with my lays, As Philomel in summer's front doth sing And stops her pipe in growth of riper days: (102:5-8)
… … … … … … … … …Three winters cold Have from the forests shook three summers' pride, Three beauteous springs to yellow autumn turn'd In process of the seasons have I seen, Three April perfumes in three hot Junes burn'd, (104:3-7)
Webster's Third New International
(Brit: the season comprising the months of February, March, and April.),夏季则从5月中旬至8月中旬(the season comprising the part of the year extending from mid-May to mid-August)。
2、The Riverside Shakespeare对第18首第1行有如下注解:a summer’s day: i.e. the summer season(此处夏日即夏季)。
克里根教授同时还指出,第1行中的“day”表示“一段时间”,相当于“period”或“term”,对此他所用的论据是《亨利六世》(中)第2幕第1场第2行“I saw not better sport these seven year’s day”。⑻
Shall I compare thee to a summer's day? Thou art more lovely
and more temperate: Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May, And summer's lease hath all too short a date: Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines, And often is his gold complexion dimm'd; And every fair from fair sometime declines, By chance or nature's changing course untrimm'd; But thy eternal summer shall not fade, Nor lose possession of that fair thou ows't; Nor shall Death brag thou wand'rest in his shade, When in eternal lines to time thou
grow'st. So long as men can breathe or eyes can see, So long lives this and this gives life to thee.
全诗既精雕细琢,又语出天成,如第13行“So long as men can breathe or eyes
can see”会使人想到英语谚语“As good as one shall see in a summer's day (summer’s days being long, with lots of time for looking⑽)”,而第1行末的“summer's day”又自然引出第3行末的“buds of May”。
Spring, the sweet spring, is the year’s pleasant king; Then blooms each thing, then maids dance in a ring, Cold doth not sting, the pretty birds do sing, Cuckoo, jug-jug, pu-we, to-witta-woo! … …
That living thus in blackest winter night, I feele the flames of hottest sommer day. (89:13-14)⒃
Lykest it seemeth in my simple wit Unto the fayre sunshine in somer’s day, That when a dreadfull storme away is flit, Thrugh the broad world doth
spred his goodly ray: (40:4-7)⒅
